The NDIS

Introduction

The NDIS is Australia’s first national Scheme for people with disability. It provides funding directly to individuals. The National Disability Insurance Scheme, also known as the NDIS, is run by the National Disability Insurance Agency, also known as the NDIA.

There are around 4.3 million Australians who have a disability. Within the next five years, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will provide more than $22 billion in funding a year to an estimated 500,000 Australians who have permanent and significant disability. For many people, it will be the first time they receive the disability support they need

The NDIS is for eligible Australians who were either born with or acquire a permanent and significant disability. A 'permanent disability' means a person's disability is likely to be lifelong.

All Australian citizens or permanent residents between the ages of 7-65 years are eligible to apply for NDIS funding. A 'significant disability' means a disability with a large impact on a person's ability to complete everyday activities.

NDIS Participants

When your application for NDIS funding is successful, you become an NDIS participant. Thus you will receive funding to obtain necessary support that will help you work towards the goals in your NDIS plan that are specific to you.

Everyone has different goals, but they could include things like improving speech or communication skills through therapy, getting help for normal, everyday living activities or equipment to help you at home or in your community, learning new skills or getting and keeping a job, becoming more independent, or making friends and connections.

Managing NDIS Funding

This NDIS funding may be managed in one or more of the following ways:

  • Self-Managed: Ask the National Disability Insurance Agency to pay on your behalf
  • Plan-Managed: Ask a third-party to manage payments for you (otherwise known as a plan manager).
  • •Agency-Managed: The NDIA pays your providers on your behalf

Whichever way you may like to manage your funding, you will always have a freedom to choose your service providers.
At Pearl Ability Care, we provide services to NDIS participants who are either Self-Managed or Plan-Managed. We are happy to discuss with you about your NDIS goals and how we may help you to achieve them for you.
