Introduction
The NDIS is Australia’s first national Scheme for people with disability. It provides funding directly to individuals. The National Disability Insurance Scheme, also known as the NDIS, is run by the National Disability Insurance Agency, also known as the NDIA.
There are around 4.3 million Australians who have a disability. Within the next five years, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will provide more than $22 billion in funding a year to an estimated 500,000 Australians who have permanent and significant disability. For many people, it will be the first time they receive the disability support they need
The NDIS is for eligible Australians who were either born with or acquire a permanent and significant disability. A 'permanent disability' means a person's disability is likely to be lifelong.
All Australian citizens or permanent residents between the ages of 7-65 years are eligible to apply for NDIS funding. A 'significant disability' means a disability with a large impact on a person's ability to complete everyday activities.
